FAQs
About the Program
What is Cyclei's curbside collection program?
Cyclei offers a convenient curbside collection program for reusable containers as part of your weekly trash and recycling pickup. Our goal is to increase adoption and return rates for reusable packaging while making sustainability easy and accessible.
Where is the program currently available?
We are piloting in Berkeley, CA, for residential buildings with fewer than 10 units that are serviced by the Ecology Center. If you live outside of this area or in a larger building, we encourage you to sign up to express your interest as we expand.
When does the service begin?
Our service begins in January 2025. If you’ve signed up and see a “come back later” message, it’s because we’re either finalizing your account or waiting for the program to launch.
What happens if I forget to put my bag out?
If you miss a collection day, simply place your bag out for the next scheduled pickup. We currently do not offer additional pickups outside the weekly schedule.
Can I opt out of the program after signing up?
Yes, you can opt out at any time. However, your activation fee is non-refundable. Any remaining credits on your account can still be redeemed.
What Can I Return?
What items can I return?
We accept items in three categories:
In-network items
Reusables from participating retailers or with deposits.
Examples: Strauss Milk bottles, Revino wine bottles, Deliver Zero containers. Please see our What we Collect page for all our partners.
Credit: Deposits will be credited to your account.
Out-of-network items
Items that are reusable but not part of our program or have state-mandated redeemable value.
Examples: Non-Revino wine bottles, CA-CRV recyclables, reusable cups from non-participating companies.
Credit: No deposit credit, but we will handle disposal for free.
Trash
Items that do not fit the above categories.
Charges: Disposal costs and a service fee will be debited from your account.
Do containers need to be washed and dried?
Yes, most partners request a quick rinse to prevent soiling other items in your bag. Check individual partner guidelines for specific requirements.
How do you prevent glass breakage?
We test materials to ensure they can withstand the collection process. For extra protection, gently place glass items in your bag or wrap them in newspaper.
What happens to out-of-network items and trash?
Out-of-network items are responsibly disposed of for free. Trash will incur a disposal fee to cover processing costs.
Costs and Payment
How much does the service cost?
For our first 1000 signups, the service will be offered at $15. Each service comes with a bag. You can purchase multiple services for additional bags.
How does purchasing service for a neighbor work?
Sustainability should be accessible to everyone. You can sponsor a neighbor’s activation fee, which will be offered to those who apply for assistance. If you want to participate, but can not afford the activation fee, please reach out to support@cyclei.eco
Why do I need to keep a card on file?
A card on file ensures any negative balances, such as those caused by trash disposal fees, are covered. We only charge the card if your account balance drops below zero.
Returns and Credits
How do I get my deposits back?
Credits for deposits will be added to your account once your bag is sorted. You can request a payout via PayPal or Venmo through your account
When will I receive my deposits?
Sorting takes up to two weeks after collection. Once complete, your deposits will be credited to your account.
Why didn’t I receive my deposit?
There are three common reasons:
Your bag hasn’t been sorted yet.
Your container was missing (e.g., taken by scavengers).
Trash disposal fees offset your credit.
What if my bag is stolen before pickup?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee credit for stolen bags. However, if you provide proof of what was placed in the bag, we may be able to assist. Please reach out to support@cyclei.eco for specific issues.
Bag Management
When will I get a new bag after collection?
We deliver a new bag before your next collection day if your account is in good standing. If you want to ensure you always have a bag to place your reusable packaging, consider purchasing an additional service.
Can I have multiple bags?
Yes! You can purchase additional bags for $25 each, and they will all be associated with the same account.
What are the return bags made out of?
Our return bags are made from 100% rPET fabric (recycled plastics) When each bag reaches the end of it’s useful lifecycle, we will upcycle it, to create filler for products like kitchen and bathroom tiles.
